Penn Mfg Co LSide.JPG - PENN MFG CO II - Rare marked lamp, marked onfont PENN MFG. CO. INC. at top and WILKES BARRE, PA. at bottom of a stamped facial figure of (presumed) William Penn, 2 in. high to top of lid, 1 3/4 in. base dia., 2 3/8 in. long double spout, lamp body and inner spout is copper, the outside of font and bottom is non-magnetic plated copper; hook, lid and outer spout are ferrous metal, unfired condition, ex-Dr. Bob Guthrie collection (The Penn Mfg. Co. marked wick lamp is unique in that it is the only plated copper lamp known among the several hundred marked oil wick lamps. It is one of two marked lamps that include a man’s face, the Sheet M. S. & Mach. Co. lamp shown elsewhere in my pics being the other. I’ve been unable to find out a lot about the Penn Mfg. Co. of Wilkes Barre, PA but what we do know is pieced together from early references and ads including various years’ Industrial Directories of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The 1901 Pennsylvania Dept. of Factory Inspector is the earliest reference I could find to the Penn Mfg. Co. listing it on Northampton St. in Wilkes Barre. An ad from the 1909 Coal Field Directory shown earlier in my pics shows Penn as a seller of hats and caps as well as oil wick lamps. The 1916 Directory first lists the Penn Manufacturing and Supply Co. as doing business at 65 S. Pennsylvania Ave. in Wilkes Barre. The company is listed as a maker of caps and hats which includes mining hats. The 1920 Directory lists Penn at the same address but has added a new category of furnishing goods in addition to hats and caps. At that time the company had 31 employees. The 1922 Directory shows a new address for the company at 152 Horton St. in Wilkes Barre and, more interestingly, also lists the company in the business category of ware/stamped tin now with 70 employees. From that point forward, little is known of the company.)
